Abajo...

Below...(the heroics of he who falls, as he falls by force, results in a forced heroism). This sensational discovery of the peso, having been verified, was announced, with a notice that occupied two pages: ONE PESO IS ENOUGH: THE RACE WILL HAPPEN. The following day, believing, perhaps, that the public had not fully understood the thing, given the complexity of the subject, another ad appeared: WE NEED NOTHING MORE THAN ONE PESO TO BRING ACCOMPLISH THE FEAT. Two or three days later, another: WITH ONE PESO CAPTAIN EDUARDO OLIVERO, etcetera, etc. One could see that, in spite of all this, the initiative isn't prospering, because it has now been close to two months with the continuous droning of "with one single peso, enough".

Resuming: if it were so easy, as it appears at first glance, to make each inhabitant of the city give one peso we would have not 80,000 but rather 2 million pesos. But supposing that it were possible to gather 80,000 pesos, wouldn't it be preferable to give them another destiny? In this case wouldn't it be better to fund more schools that we are lacking? Before putting ourselves to fly through t, wouldn't it be wiser to learn to read and write...to not pass for idiots? With 80,000 pesos wouldn't it be possible to rehabilitate the Institute of Cancer that has closed its doors from a lack of resources? Couldn't they open roads? Or combat goiters in the ranges where there are entire regions of cretins?

But humanity, like we said above, has, in these moments, a brain full of clouds and cannot think of more than the nihilist emptiness...Meanwhile, humanity is dumbstruck, until a new order arises, with its mouth intelligently open.

SCIENCE AND POETRY DO NOT ADVANCE TOGETHER

One must rectify. One must always rectify. This is where we stopped to read an article by E. Bonilla, in "The Literary Gazette of Madrid" about the origin of the goiter, vulgarly called coto, and we discovered a new truth. And it is this: that one of the principle sources of the goiter is misery. For those that ignore it, it is agreed upon to say here that a goiter like the deaf-mute are two pathological varieties of cretinism. Or at the least they are two distinct manifestations of one same degenerative process: cretinic degeneration.

And here the rectification is produced. Cervantes affirmed that, "misery develops talent". But, if the lack of nourishment produces a goiter and if the goiter is a degeneration of the brain, it results then, that misery instead of developing talent, develops cretinosis.

THE MAJORITY OF WRITERS ARE LIKE DUCKS: IF THEY DON'T DIRTY THEMSELVES GOING IN, THEY DIRTY THEMSELVES COMING OUT

When an ironic writer is given to talking seriously, we take it as a joke, and vice verse, when he is given to speaking humorously. To fully understand the nature of irony it is necessary to proceed this way. On the contrary, an intellectual attitude like this would never get a laugh and no one would use it. Irony operates with arguments like the slang of Buenos Aires operates with words: by verse. When an ironist speaks, then, we don't have to take the thing at face value, but rather on the flip side.

Aside from that, we speak now of G. Bernard Shaw, ironic writer, outstandingly ingenious, of whom another writer said that he never knew when he was speaking seriously or humorously. We know that the author of "The Chocolate Soldier", is a socialist of the right, in his political activism, and of the left, when he writes. Because of this, he surprised us with his "elogy of facism". But taking into account, the dialectic modality of the ironists, if we invert the word "elogy", we obtain the contrary, which is "censure". We cannot come to a definitive judgment about his opinion, because it has been brought to us as a fragment and in a doubtful manner. We transcribe, nonetheless, this wire from "The Press" that appeared on the 29th of last month. This is what it says:

"London, etc. United, etc. Via, etc. --- in a letter directed, etc., Bernard Shaw, referring to Benito Mussolini, says: The head of the Italian government, he can't do everything by himself. Neither can he live forever, nor can he be sure that he wont end his days in Saint Helen or Chislehurst. Mussolini has the duty of preoccupying himself with a successor for the day that his heart stops beating...the day will arrive when it will be necessary to choose a new Mussolini".

This is what Bernard Shaw said humorously, surely, of what he thinks seriously. To announce to a dictator that he could very well end his days in a jail cell is like predicting that that the knot of a noose awaits a bandit.

In another wire from "The Nation", he is compared to Napoleon Bonaparte. (This, perhaps, is said as a joke). Then, it opines that "the revolutionaries have come in front of a dilemma: either they fold under the failure of the dictatorship of the proletariat, or continue vociferously against the...
