Saber tomar un camino
Y seguirlo,
Sin temor a la acechanza
Del enemigo.

Ir derecho a la conquista
De la vida: heroico, altivo,
Sin un solo titubeo:
¡Como una luz o un destino!

¡Eso es ser fuerte, es ser hombre
- Lo siento como lo digo —
Eso es ser lo que yo soy,
Eso es ser lo que yo he sido!

Sé valiente; sé altanera.
Tén, como tiene la fiera
Esa sublime virtud
De no entregarse cautiva,
Rechazando siempre altiva
El dogal de la esclavitud.

Y si te rinde la fuerza,
Que tu espíritu no tuerza
Al rendir tu cuerpo inerte.
¡Y, antes de entregar tu vida
Como una cosa vendida,
Reta, triunfante, a la muerte!

Firmness

To know how to take a path
And follow it,
Without fear of the lurking
Enemy.

To go straight to the conquest
Of life: heroic, haughty,
Without a single hesitation:
Like a light or a destiny!

That is to be strong, to be a man
- I feel it as much as I say it —
That is who I am,
That is who I've been!

Be strong; be haughty.
Have, like the wild beast,
That sublime virtue
Of not surrendering yourself captive,
Always proudly rejecting
The noose of slavery.

And if force defeats you,
May your spirit not bend
Upon rendering your body motionless.
And, before handing in your life
Like a sold item,
Triumphantly, challenge death itself!
